1. Hydraulic Head Concepts

  • Pore Water Pressure
    • Pore water pressure (\(u\)) is the pressure of water within the void spaces of a soil: \(u = h_w \cdot \gamma_w\) where \(h_w\) is the height of water above the point and \(\gamma_w = \rho g\) is the unit weight of water.
    • Pore pressure is a scalar quantity — it acts equally in all directions at a given point.
    • Pore pressure alone does not tell you whether flow will occur. Two points can have very different pore pressures but identical total heads, in which case no flow occurs.
  • Bernoulli's Equation
    • Derived from the work-energy theorem applied to a unit mass of fluid moving from point A to point B.
    • Three components of work:
      1. Work against gravity (lifting the mass): \(W_1 = gz\) (where \(z = z_B - z_A\)).
      2. Work changing kinetic energy: \(W_2 = (v_B^2 - v_A^2)/2\).
      3. Work compressing the fluid: \(W_3 = (u_B - u_A)/\rho_w\).
    • Total potential: \(\phi = W_1 + W_2 + W_3\). Dividing by \(g\) converts to units of head (length).
    • Bernoulli's equation in terms of total head at a single point: \(h = z + v^2/(2g) + u/\gamma_w\)
    • The three components: \(h_{total} = h_{elevation} + h_{velocity} + h_{pressure}\)
  • Elevation Head (\(h_{el}\))
    • The vertical distance from an arbitrary datum to the point in question.
    • A consistent datum must be used for all points in the analysis. The choice of datum is arbitrary but must not change within a problem.
  • Velocity Head (\(h_{vel}\))
    • \(h_{vel} = v^2/(2g)\)
    • For groundwater flow, velocities are extremely small (typically \(10^{-6}\) to \(10^{-3}\) m/s). The resulting velocity head is negligibly small compared to elevation and pressure head.
    • Therefore, velocity head is always neglected in groundwater problems.
  • Pressure Head (\(h_p\))
    • \(h_p = u / \gamma_w\)
    • Represents the height of the water column in a piezometer (standpipe) inserted at the point.
    • Positive below the water table; zero at the water table; negative above the water table (in the capillary zone).
  • Total Head for Groundwater Flow
    • After neglecting velocity head: \(h = z + u/\gamma_w\)
    • Physical interpretation: \(h\) is the level to which water would rise in a piezometer inserted at the point in question, measured relative to the datum.
    • Flow only occurs when there is a difference in total head between two points. Flow moves from high total head to low total head.
    • Two points can have different pressures and different elevations but the same total head — in that case, no flow occurs.
  • Key Examples
    • If \(h_A = h_B\): No flow occurs between A and B, regardless of pressure differences.
    • If \(h_A > h_B\): Flow occurs from A to B.
    • In a static water column, pressure increases with depth but total head is the same everywhere — no flow.

2. Darcy's Law

  • Darcy's Experiment (1856)
    • Henry Darcy conducted laboratory experiments on flow through sand columns, systematically varying the soil type, column length \(L\), and head values \(h_1\) and \(h_2\).
    • He discovered that the volumetric flow rate is proportional to the head difference and inversely proportional to the length of the flow path.
  • Darcy's Law
    • \(q = -kA \dfrac{\Delta h}{L} = kA \dfrac{h_1 - h_2}{L}\)
    • Where: \(q\) = volumetric flow rate [L\(^3\)/T], \(k\) = hydraulic conductivity [L/T], \(A\) = gross cross-sectional area of flow [L\(^2\)], \(\Delta h\) = change in total head [L], \(L\) = length of flow path [L].
    • Often written as: \(q = kiA\) where \(i = -dh/ds\) is the hydraulic gradient (head loss per unit length along the flow path \(s\)).
    • The negative sign indicates flow occurs in the direction of decreasing head.
    • Darcy's Law is valid for laminar flow (low Reynolds number), which is the case for virtually all groundwater flow in soils.
  • Hydraulic Conductivity (\(k\))
    • A measure of the soil's ability to transmit water. Also called the coefficient of permeability.
    • Depends on both the soil properties (grain size, void ratio, structure) and the fluid properties (viscosity, density).

    • For most soils, \(k_x > k_z\) (horizontal conductivity exceeds vertical conductivity) due to layered deposition and horizontal bedding.
  • Darcian (Discharge) Velocity vs. Seepage Velocity
    • Darcian velocity (discharge velocity): \(v_d = q/A = ki\). This is a fictitious velocity based on the gross cross-sectional area, including both solids and voids. Water does not actually flow through the solid grains.
    • Seepage velocity (actual average velocity of water through the pores): \(v_s = v_d / n_e = ki / n_e\) where \(n_e\) is the effective porosity.
    • The seepage velocity is always greater than the Darcian velocity because water only flows through the void spaces, which occupy a fraction of the total cross-section.
  • Effective Porosity
    • Not all voids in the soil conduct flow. Some voids are isolated, dead-end pores, or too small for water to flow through.

4. Flow Nets

  • Definition
    • A flow net is a graphical solution to the Laplace equation consisting of two families of curves:
      1. Flow lines (streamlines): Represent the paths that water follows as it flows through the soil.
      2. Equipotential lines: Lines of constant total head. Water level in a piezometer inserted anywhere along an equipotential line would rise to the same elevation.

  • Rules for Constructing Flow Nets
    1. Flow lines and equipotential lines must intersect at 90-degree angles.
    2. The cells formed by the two sets of lines should have a uniform length-to-width ratio (\(\ell/b\) = constant). Ideally, \(\ell/b = 1\) (square cells), which simplifies calculations and makes the flow net easier to draw.
    3. Each pair of adjacent flow lines defines a flow channel. If the cells are square (\(\ell/b = 1\)), the flow through each channel is equal (\(\Delta q\) = constant).
    4. Each pair of adjacent equipotential lines defines an equipotential drop. If the cells are square, the head drop between each pair is equal (\(\Delta h = H_{total}/n_e\)).

  • Partial Drops and Non-Square Elements
    • It is not always possible to make every cell perfectly square. Partial drops (fractional cells) should be included in the count of \(n_e\) and \(n_f\).
    • Non-square elements can be verified by subdividing: after subdividing a non-square element, you should get three square elements plus one non-square element with the same shape as the original.
  • Unconfined Flow (Free Surface Problems)
    • For problems with a free water surface (e.g., earth dams, levees), the upper flow line is the line of seepage (phreatic surface).
    • The line of seepage is simultaneously: (a) a flow line, and (b) a line of zero pressure (\(u = 0\), so \(h = z\)).

  • Computing Pressures from a Flow Net

5. Analytical Solutions — 2D Profile Modeling

  • When Analytical Solutions Apply

  • Dupuit Assumptions
    1. The exit point of the phreatic surface coincides with the tailwater elevation.

7. Construction Dewatering

  • Purpose and Methods
    • Construction dewatering lowers the water table at an excavation site to allow dry working conditions.
    • Wellpoint systems: Closely spaced shallow wells connected to a common header pipe and pump. Used for shallow excavations in sands and silts.
    • Deep well systems: Individual pumped wells with submersible pumps, used for deeper excavations or more permeable soils.
